Jack Riddell Family Fund Legacy established through the South Huron Community Fund
Annual scholarship created for students in Huron Perth counties pursuing career in agriculture
Exeter, Ontario, January 4, 2018.
Through his work as Member of Provincial Parliament and Minister of Agriculture and Food, educator, 4-H leader, auctioneer, and farmer, Jack Riddell is known for many roles in his community. Following a long tradition of supporting the agriculture sector in Ontario, the Riddell Family want to give back to the community that gave Jack so much support. They are doing this by establishing a scholarship with the South Huron Community Fund and the Avon Maitland School Board that will benefit generations of students in the future.
“Jack has had an incredible impact on agriculture in Ontario including tirelessly devoting himself to training youth to become the next generation of farmers, which is one of the many contributions that led him to being inducted into the Ontario Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2017,” said Tom Prout, Chair of the South Huron Community Fund. “This family legacy will continue for decades through an investment in a youth scholarship.”
The scholarship will be available to any grade 12 student in the Avon Maitland District School Board who displays academic and leadership skills in their community and is pursuing an agricultural education in Canada. The actual amount of the annual scholarship is not yet known as donations are still pouring in from family, friends and peers – the latest contribution from the Western Branch of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists brings the total to over $17,000! A target amount of $25,000 has been set by the South Huron Community as this would generate an annual scholarship of $1,000.
“We’re asking individuals and organizations that want to support the next generation of local leaders in agriculture to donate and help reach the target scholarship amount,” added Prout.
Whether the priorities relate to the arts or the environment, to youth or the elderly, the South Huron Community Fund is dedicated to supporting the long-term needs of our region. Funds raised create a permanent endowment that generates annual grants for local charitable organizations. Due to their experience, commitment to projects in South Huron and for administration efficiency, the South Huron Community Fund operates as part of the Grand Bend Community Foundation.
